In Memoriam: Robert Dalton
As friends and family remember Robert Dalton, we want to make sure our Winston-Salem National Little League supporters do too.
When Bob was growing up, there was no Little League. He began playing baseball his freshman year at Reynolds as a pitcher and in the outfield.
After graduating he joined the Marine Corps and served one year before going to Virginia Tech where he played on the baseball team. After serving in the Korean War and then finishing his degree at Virginia Tech, he went on the play semi-pro for City Beverage for several years.
Bob started coaching Little League in 1961. He coached Little League for 34 years. His coaching philosophy was that every kid needed a place to play and deserved that chance, regardless of ability to pay.
Being at the Bridge was a family affair for Bob and his family, much like it is for all of us. His wife, Inez, and four daughters, Shirley, Diane, Denise, and Robbi spent countless hours at the field volunteering.
They even planted all the beautiful oak trees around the fields that provide the shade we much appreciate during the season. Bob coached with his brother-in-law, Richard Swing, who was also a big part of field maintenance.
Bob’s nephew Kevin played under high in both majors and seniors, winning championships in both age groups. Bob shared his love of the game with his family.
Bob was also heavily involved with field maintenance, both when he was coaching, but also for 10+ years after he “retired” from coaching. Bob dedicated over 45 years to Winston Salem Nationals.
When the Board decided to name the field after him, he asked why they would do that.
Commenting that he was “just a regular volunteer.” He considered himself a true servant of the league.
Thank you, Bob, for making WSNLL what it is today. We are truly grateful.
